Structural and construction timber has been the backbone of what we do since 1856. Our Gloucester yard carries meaningful stock across the full construction timber range — this isn't a category bolted on to fill a gap. From C24 carcassing in treated and untreated options through to CLS studs, treated roof and wall battens, and firring strips, you'll find the sections you need at trade-competitive prices from a merchant with over 170 years of experience in handling structural softwood.
C24 Carcassing Timber
Our C24 carcassing range is available in both treated (green tanalised) and untreated options across a full range of 47mm sections from 47×50mm through to 47×225mm, plus 75×150mm for heavier structural applications. C24 is the higher of the two common structural grading standards for softwood — suitable for floor joists, rafters, wall plates, and general structural framing where load-bearing performance matters. We stock the following sections as standard:
-
47×50mm — stud noggins, general framing
-
47×75mm — studwork, general carcassing
-
47×100mm — joists, rafters, general structural use
-
47×125mm — floor joists, rafters
-
47×150mm — floor joists, rafters, longer spans
-
47×175mm — deeper joists and rafters
-
47×200mm — larger span floor joists
-
47×225mm — deep joists and structural beams
-
75×150mm — heavier structural applications
Treated carcassing is pressure treated with preservative and recommended — and in many cases required by Building Regulations — for timber in high-risk positions: ground floor joists, flat roof construction, or anywhere the timber may be exposed to moisture or condensation. Untreated carcassing is suited to internal structural use in dry, well-ventilated conditions such as upper floor joists, internal stud walls, and rafters in a ventilated cold roof construction. If you're unsure which applies to your build specification, our team can advise — or refer to Approved Document C of the Building Regulations.
CLS Timber
CLS (Canadian Lumber Standard) timber is machined to a smooth, rounded-arrised finish on all four faces — making it the preferred choice for stud wall framing, partitioning, and any application where a consistent cross-section matters for plasterboard fixing or insulation fitting. We stock 50×75mm (finished 38×63mm) for standard non-load-bearing stud partitions, and 50×100mm (finished 38×89mm) for heavier studwork and load-bearing partitions, both supplied in 2.4m lengths as standard.
Treated Battens & Firring Strips
All roofing battens we stock are preservative treated as standard in compliance with BS 5534. We carry 19×38mm sawn treated batten for standard roofing underslating applications, 25×38mm for heavier tiles or wall and floor use, and 25×50mm for counter batten and general wall batten applications — all available in trade lengths. Firring strips for flat roof falls are available on request — contact our Gloucester branch for current sizes and pricing.
At Nicks Timber, the majority of our construction timber customers are tradespeople — builders, roofing contractors, groundworkers, and joiners who need consistent stock, reliable supply, and pricing that reflects their volume. If you're placing regular orders across multiple projects, get in touch to discuss a trade account. We can quote on full project requirements and offer cutting to specific lengths in-yard at our Gloucester branch.
